Heh... in this particular thread, where the OP was doing an update of every record, specifying READ instead of READE shouldn't help at all, since you can't use blockign when you're doing updates. So the people responding with that weren't thinking it all the way through, anyway.
Like I said in an earlier message, the way you achieve optimal performance is to try changing different things and benchmarking each one. See what works best in your particular situation. Test, Test, Test.
But in order to do that, you need to know what the options are and why one is sometimes better (and sometimes worse!) than the others. And that's where there's a lot of value in reading the various suggestions from members of the list.
