One of the reasons I stopped using system() was lack of message data. 
Using QCMDEXC and the Program Status Data Structure does a slightly better 
job.  An even better solution, albeit with more setup, is to use QCAPCMD. 
Not sure if it will return diagnostic messages.  However the use of either 
QCAPCMD, or QCMDEXC, followed by some of the receive message api's might 
do the trick for you.
