All, I think the most important part of the equation, performance-wise, is record blocking. You can tweak it if you use READ, but not if you use READE. Record blocking can make a HUGE difference in performance, if done properly. Good blocking value = ODP-buffer-size / record-length (rounded down to nearest whole number) If you're talking about 'typical' files here, which don't use ALTSEQ et al in their keys, then READ + key-check will CERTAINLY be faster than READE, if you use record blocking.
