Hi Joep, Yes to both (in another module). I open a directory, read through it looking for files of interest, load their names in an array, and close it. I can't see any way for the close to fail to be executed. Is it possible that the number of files in the directory, being very large, could in itself cause that message? I have directories with tens of thousands of files... And if so, do you use 'closedir' as well? It runs fine with one exception. Periodically, it returns a 'Too many open files for this process.' error when trying to open a file for write. Obviously I must be failing to close files somewhere, but I have not been able to locate the fault. It would surely help if I could, at failure time, list all the open files giving me a place to look but I haven't found anything that would let me do that. It is barely possible the problem is not in the module I am examining (it's a fairly complex process overall). I would appreciate any pointers or suggestions - api's whatever that could help me nail this down. Can you get a list of open ifs files?
