This can > be done, but what am I missing? The fact that by default, OS/400 optimizes 5250 operations by deferring write operations until you also do an input operation. There are two ways around this: 1) CRTDSPF ... DFRWRT(*NO) 2) Add the FRCDTA keyword at the record level in the DDS I prefer option 2 as it only affects the format(s) where you name it, allowing other formats to remain optimized. Plus it doesn't require the value to be given on the CRTDSPF each time, if you are not using a tool which automates that for you. Doug
