Tony, I find that it's easier to let the the RCVJRNE command do much of the work for you. Then you only need to code an exit program. Similar to triggers, which are really just a form of exit program, you get passed a buffer containing the structure of the journal entry plus an event code which, if it equals '1' you do your own thing with the entry.
