You used zoned decimal instead of packed. And you are using single-digit values. Because the zone bits shift position between zoned and packed numbers at the right _AND_ there's only one significant digit, the results might be expected.
Tom, I used the exact code that the OP posted when I asked what he was doing. I asked him to show me the code that was causing the problem, and that's what he showed me.
