Never said the questions were stupid... But it appears that finding some type of class, book, etc would benefit you greatly. Also when using embedded SQL the precompiler listing is almost (if not more) important as the compiler listing. Any field used must be defined in the program to be used as a host variable. Using them in an SQL statement does not "define" them to the program, hence the precompiler will choke on it.
