Or, would it be like IP and IS with matching records defined? Lots less coding. --------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.martinvt.com --------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Date: 10/11/05 13:47:31 To: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Subject: Re: Multiformat Logical File Satheesh - Suppose that you have a Sales order detail file that has currently active sales order information, and a history file with the same record layout containing archived sales order information. You can build a keyed multiformat logical over the two files to use in an RPG program, and by using SETLL and READ or READE on the FILE name, not the record format name(s), you can process the current and historical information through the use of the logical file. This is functionally equivalent to performing a UNION of the two files to get information via SQL. Another use for multiformat logicals is with traditional AS/400 - iSeries EDI packages. Depending on the complexity of the EDI document, you will have a Header file and one or more Detail files that are used to construct the data that drives the EDI translator. You will typically tie all of these files together with a multiformat logical file and use the logical file in the EDI translation process.
