In Tom's defense, I would imagine that he is talking about the fact that US math scores tend to be (much) lower than math scores in the rest of the world. So the foreign comments he's thinking about were probably along the lines of "stupid Americans, can't even handle basic/remedial algebra." At least that's the way I read his post. For the record, I agree. The transformations being discussed should be well within that capabilities of anybody (business or programmer) needing to talk about the expression. However, I admit that I don't usually bother to simplify most expressions I deal with.
