Joel, One benefit is the elimination of the file fields as global variables. They are now in a separate module and you have to access them through some sort of procedure. It becomes more obvious when you use those variables and you gain more control over their access. If you have two files sharing the same field names then you no longer have conflicts where a file read on one file inadvertently updates the same field in the other file. Another example is an address. I could create a procedure to set/get the address as a whole. This prevents anyone from updating the city without also updating the street address. However, if the file I/O procedures are written to just return the entire record from the file then, yes, there isn't much benefit. Paul
