Rich's example is in fact very close to what you said your method was. The only difference I can see is when the WRITE fails because another a record has appeared since the READPE he simply loops on the WRITE (which is all he needs to do) rather than the whole thing. If you dry run carefully through Rich's code with all the conditions that could occur I think you'll find it's exactly what you were trying to achieve.
