Simplify it greatly. I created a C module like so:

#include <stdio.h>
extern cprint(char *str) {
    printf("%s\n", str);
}

And reference it from RPG:

     * use the c printf routine, but simplified so rpg can call it.
     D cprint          pr                  extproc('cprint')
     D  str                            *   value options(*string)

     C callp cprint('Press enter to continue')
