I think you meant "records" rather than "files."  That's OK; it's Friday.

If thinking of it as a status field works for you, go with it. I think, however, that an important consideration is the use of the ReUseDeletedRecords option on the CRTPF command. Deleted records are re-used in the order available (RRN). In other words, if the ReUse... option is specified retrieving the records in RRN order will *not* necessarily be arrival sequence (i.e., the order in which they hit the fan, I mean, file).
