Well, I am not sure what the performance implications are, if any, but I 
suppose you could make a char(*) the maximum size of an RPGLE character 
field, or maybe drop it down 2 or 3 characters to avoid any 'overhead'.

So far, the only prototypes I found in QSYSINC/QRPGLESRC was in member 
JNI.
