%LEN & %TRIM not returning trimmed value

I've searched the list and haven't found exactly what's going on here.  I 
assume that I don't understand how to use %LEN and %TRIM correctly.

I am being passed a parameter that is defined as 120A.  I'm trying to find 
the length of it.  using

length = %LEN(%TRIM(Parm1));


However, length always get's returned as 120. 

Any suggestions?
