Rob,

but beware of the over-use of SQL.

Using SQL where it's better than native I/O leads to using SQL where it's
as good as native I/O; that leads to using SQL everywhere; using SQL
everywhere leads you straight to the lava pits of the dark side.

Alan,

As you personally attest, now that you have imbedded SQL you use it
because it's easier. There's still a lot of chest pounders that feel all
programmers would be better if they started out coding assembler.

The precompiler got a LOT better in V5R3. But prior to that, you were
right - it seemed a shame to be paying for ST1 when they put zero dollars
into development of it. I've been in some good discussions with IBM and I

am convinced that V5R3 was not the end of the line for enhancements to the

precompiler and we will never return to the dark ages.
