I am looking at creating a program to retrieve a user profile's output
queue name. This would probably use QSYRUSRI or RTVUSRPRF and drill down
for special values like *WRKSTN.

Isn't that what RTVJOBA PRTDEV() does? Or do you need to do it from a different job?

If you followed the path of getting the print dev from the user profile, device name, and system value, then the user wouldn't be able to change it with the CHGJOB command. Nor, would operators.

Frequently people here will call and say that they're printouts aren't going where they expect them to. We use WRKACTJOB to find their job, and use option 2 to change the print device. As long as you use RTVJOBA (or equivalent API) to get the value, this will still work. But, if you chase through usrprf/dev/sysval, you'll lose that ability.

Something to think about.
