On my system, the code for HSSF_save() looks like this (it may have been updated at one time):

    wwStr = new_String(peFilename);
    wwFile = new_FileOutputStream(wwStr);
    HSSFWorkbook_write(peBook: wwFile);
    FileOutputStream_close(wwFile);
    hssf_freeLocalRef(wwFile);
    hssf_freeLocalRef(wwStr);

Just to verify -- do you have that FileOutputStream_Close() statement in your copy?
