RPG relies heavily on static storage even in subprocedures that apparently only use automatic storage. THREAD(*SERIALIZE) is necessary to ensure the correct handling of this static storage. This applies not only to modules that contain calls to Java methods, but also to any modules that might be called during interactions with Java.
