You can still create SQL views, and process data using RUNSQLSTM. I use 
views and indexing for reporting, and sometimes use the in my RPG. I have 
even built some service programs that map to SQL UDFs, and use them from 
within SQL views. 

But yes, there is still alot more when you can actually embed SQL.
