It depends.

If you are expecting LOTS of errors then use a function to test the field 
for numerics.
If you are expecting few errors, then using MONITOR will outperform your 
function.

In other words,
The MONITOR condition will only kick off if there is a problem, however, 
if you use a function instead, your function will have to be executed 
every time.  Understand?

Free Format TESTN?






A question just came up at our shop about the free format replacement for
TESTN.  Should we code a function to replace this opcode?  Is there some
comparable API?  Should we just monitor for a RPG error when using the
field?  What is your solution and what is IBM's recommended solution?
