What if some of the subfile columns are numeric, some are alpha, and
some are dates? Could you create one key field that could be loaded
with all of these data types?

No problem. I don't do it for subfiles but I do it all the time for reports. One program loads a QTEMP work file and another program prints from it. Unless I know that the report is always only going to be printed in one sequence, I use one or more free-format sort fields. If there are various breaks, I will create a separate field for each break. The report program knows nothing about the contents of the fields, only that if a particular field changes from the previous record, it is a level break at that level and all levels below it.

The fields are alphanumeric ascending, but with a little ingenuity one field can contain alpha, numeric, and date information, with both ascending and descending sorts intermixed. Since the report program does not care about the contents of the fields, only if they have changed from the previous record, you can do whatever manipulations are necessary to make the fields do what you need.
