Also, when I first learned RPG, I was confused about the READE op. In the manual, it led me to believe that if you open a file, and the first thing you do is a READE, you should be positioned to the first record with a matching key, if there is one. I know now that is not true, and you have to 'prime the pump' with a SETLL. Too bad READE didn't have a built in mechanism to do the SETLL for you, if you wanted it to. I still like to use SETLL (it seems to be quicker to use SETLL rather than CHAIN, if you just need to know if a matching record exists, but don't need the record), but if READE behaved this way, it would also shortcut the operation. -- "Enter any 11-digit prime number to continue..."
