Steve, Im assuming your talking about Websphere Application Server >> Is WebSphere a universal thing or is the version on the AS400 different to the one that may be used for Oracle? Websphere esentially works the same on all platforms. It's a container for running your java based web applications. Eg I use WDSC running on my local pc to develop my web applications. I test them in a Websphere Application Server 5.1 test environment running on my local pc, export the code as an EAR file which includes everything that I need for my application (almost, environment stuff like datasources are setup in the container). I deploy that EAR as is onto our 400, and it runs, no changes. We have verified this by deploying the same code to a linux box and it runs the same. The things that will change are the bits that sit outside of your code, and outside of the container, eg as400 specific stuff like dataqueues, and not going to work the same on a linux box or on a pc The other problems you mention sound like design issues, nothing to do with websphere. If this work is being done on Oracle, im not Oracle expert, but im sure it could be possible, if its java web applications, the same is true. These days you can get most things done on most platforms, it really depends on the skill and knowledge of the analysts/programmers. Put inexperienced people on virtually any platform and they will struggle. cheers Colin.W http://as400blog.blogspot.com Extension 5800 Direct dial 0870 429 5800 -----Original Message----- From: Raby, Steve (GE Advanced Materials, consultant) [mailto:steve.raby@xxxxxx] Sent: 21 March 2005 16:11 To: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Subject: WebSphere Question Hello all, Is WebSphere a universal thing or is the version on the AS400 different to the one that may be used for Oracle? That's the first part of my question, the second part is, my wife is currently undergoing UAT of a piffling little system that has taken two MIS departments over two years to write (and still not one working program), basically now because of their inability they have reduced the requirements to an inventory and an invoice database with a number of reports. Now they say that they cannot produce a report in WebSphere that looks like the cover sheet that she uses, they also cannot put the date, program and user on the report. The report columns come out alphabetically by field name, the list of things they say they cannot do goes on and on and on. This cannot be true. WebSphere is not a giant step backwards is it? Or, as I believe, she is being sold a bill of goods by a department who are too lazy or have not the expertise that they claim. Given their original requirements an AS400 and two programmers I could have had their system out in 6-8 months! So much for the wonder of ! Oracle and associated stuff!
