I think the US approach involves a comfortably sized length of pipe.

When RPGIV first came out I was trying to sell my boss on the
advantages.  I mentioned the ability to write calculations as
expressions with parentheses and other "frills."  He said that he didn't
see any advantage because he could read the C Spec Classic as easily as
he could read algebraic notation. I don't think he was exaggerating.
Fortunately IBM eventually stopped supporting v2r3.  <g>

Last year he took me to task for not using the "shop standard" RPGIII
(barely) date program--a monster that takes more than 10 parms, returns
anything you could conceivably want, and requires a cheat sheet to use.
I convinced him that RPGIV date arithmetic was at least as accurate (his
big concern) and easier to use.  It wasn't easy.  It's been about ten
years since he did much coding.
