Those are figurative constants that the compiler won't let you use in that context. What I do is create named constants which I include in my copybook for the prototype. Being the USA type who never had to deal with variant characters, I use a leading @ instead of * then define constants like @DAYS, @MONTHS, etc. I define the actual parameter as an integer, and assign the constants enumeration values such as 0, 1, 2, 3, etc in my named constants.
