May I suggest that you combine a %status with the %error? Just to handle
some obscure possibilities:
- You are manually opening the file, and forgot to.
- If the file is totally empty do you get a different situation?
- If your write fails because someone added a trigger and throws an
exception if certain criteria are not met...
- If your write fails because of a constraint error.

Re: Suggested technique

Thanks Ron.  I finalized on:

Dou Not %Error;

    // Find next memo seq# for member
    SetGT(E)  (CI.Family#:CI.Member#) Mmemo_I;
    ReadPE(E) (CI.Family#:CI.Member#) Mmemo_I MI;

    If %Found(Mmemo_I);
       MO.Mmseq#=MI.Mmseq#+1;
    Else;
       MO.Mmseq#=1;
    EndIf;

    Write(E) Mmorec MO;
EndDo;

Immediately after the Write, the condition for the Dou is checked, so
this will work.
