V5R2 is very picky. You have to use LIKEREC, and it has to be like the record format name. In V5R3 it's a lot less picky.


So, define the data structure like this:

  dpatient        e ds                  likerec(PATMSTR:*INPUT)

(qualified is implied, you don't have to specify it...)

Then, when you READ, also use the record format name:

read(e) patmstr patient;
