I am not sure what you mean by the system backups.  Are you saying
that the iSeries was being backed up, i.e. SAVLIB *NONSYS, so the
system was ended to a restricted condition?  Or are you saying the
network server that houses your VPN was being backed up?  If the
latter is the case, couldn't you just submit the SAVCHGOBJ to batch,
so that you wouldn't have to be signed on to an interactive session?
