The indicator assigned to SFLCLR must be on to clear the subfile. The indicator(s) assigned to SFLDSP and SFLDSPCTL must be on to display the subfile formats. Assigning the inverse of an indicator is an interesting technique, because you won't be clearing and displaying the subfile at the same time, but when I learned subfiles, it was easier at first to just learn how the different keywords work, with indicators assigned one to each keyword.
