You can have a file defined in your RPG program as FILEA and execute a command either inside your program or in a calling CL to OVRDBF to FILE123. Assuming no decimal data errors the RPG program doesn't know the difference.
Offten used with logical files.
Also often used with multi-member files.
I have also seen it used in an interface tool where the program was reading a file from another software package and didn't know what the file name was until run time.
