To develop basic programs, no it isn't very difficult. But I recall being in school and banging my head against the desk when I actually got the concept of the subfiles, and 80% of the class did not and we spent over a week sitting there going over and over subfiles again and again sigh. And once the instructor spent a week on it, still over 20% did not understand the concept of subfiles. Not to mention the API's, and hell even I was afraid of procedures until recently when I decided to get my feet wet. So yes, it's an easy language to learn, but a lifetime to master (to quote an old Parker Bros game lol). I do not remember what it was called, but it had these little pegs in it and it was a square board with holes in it. Ron Power Programmer Information Services City Of St. John's, NL P.O. (I'm in agree mode today :).) RPG is pretty easy and straightforward. If a person graduated with a cs degree or done other programming before, learning RPG on his/her own should be a piece of cake. -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Buck Calabro Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 2004 8:51 AM To: rpg400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: New RPG programmers I don't think there is a need for an RPG tutorial, and this is how my thinking goes. RPG isn't a difficult language. It doesn't have the interesting character set of APL, nor does it have the complex OO techniques of Smalltalk. It's very straightforward, even with the concept of externalised I/O. About the only thing a beginner really needs help on (that is, something that isn't found in C, Java, or VB) is external device files like display and printers. Especially subfiles and how the various indicators affect the output. -- This is the RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries (RPG400-L) mailing list To post a message email: RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/rpg400-l or email: RPG400-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l.
