Based on a request he made to midrange-l I suspect that he's only scanning a screen input field to see if he should use LIKE or equal on a dynamic sql statement. (That and the list of characters he's searching for.) So I think it's not a lot of records. Nope. Gotta scan multiple passes. If there's a lot of data records for which this is required, you might consider using memchr() instead of %SCAN() since it will search much faster than %SCAN(). -Bob Cozzi -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Dan Bale Sent: Tuesday, October 05, 2004 2:34 PM To: RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: multiple search arguments in one scan? Crud - severe brain fade moment... I want to test for the existence of one of several characters in a string. %check lets you check for the first character that is NOT found in the "comparator". %scan only lets you specify one search argument. I need to test a string to see if it has any occurrences of any of the characters &, %, *, _, or ? There *is* an easy way to do this in RPG, is there not?
