Hi Scott

Thanks for that, I'll have a look at the documentation.

I want to avoid using DSPFFD to an outfile primarily for performance
reasons. The program may be called for individual database files
interactively or for complete libraries in batch and I want to minimise the
time taken to run. Plus, of course, there's the opportunity of getting to
grips with API programming - I've done a bit in the past year, but not
enough that I have to keep going back to the manuals and previous programs.

All the best

Jonathan

The QDBRTVFD API has that info in the Qdb_Qddfrefi data structure.

Though, personally, I'm having a hard time understanding why you wouldn't
want to use DSPFFD to an *outfile.
