Barbara,

Wouldn't recursion be another case that could cause problems? Procedure A reads record 1 into a static DS, calls procedure B, which calls procedure A again, which reads record 2 in the same static DS. If the first invocation returns a pointer to the DS, it would return a pointer to record 2.
