Shades of a difference in how negative packed fields were encoded. The 360 
world went one way and the s/38 went another. Don't remember the details now 
but 
if have a "green card" the differences are defined there. It was a "big deep 
secret" because someone made a mistake or rather a wrong interpretation and 
didn't want to face up to it.
