Lokesh, There are significant differences between ASCII and EBCDIC. While the translation between "characters" is handled by the majority of file transfer products like FTP, the bigger issue is in the representation of numeric data. You will experience translation problems if the mainframe file contains packed or binary fields. Because many file transfer products are unaware of the fields "format", they perform simple byte-for-byte translation. The translated result of of packed or binary field is usually unintelligable. You will have similar translation problems in trying to handle a numeric fields sign (+/-). Hope this helps. Hi Everyone, I could not find any conclusive information on the Internet hence the mail to this forum. I need to convert an EDCDIC file (received from mainframe) to ASCII. In most of the documents EDCDIC and EBCDIC is used interchangeably. My initial research suggests that one is a subset of other. I am trying to confirm if there is any difference in the character set or anything I should be aware of before starting the conversion. Any pointers will be helpful. regards, Lokesh Gupta, Infosys Technologies Ltd., Mobile: 239-839-7673 www.infosys.com _______________________________________________ This is the RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries (RPG400-L) mailing list To post a message email: RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/rpg400-l or email: RPG400-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l.
