You are quite correct. (Hope I didn't confuse.) ALWNULL is only required when performing native file I/O - not for null-processing with embedded SQL. As you pointed out, the whole purpose of indicator variables is to provide null processing in all HLL's - even those which have no native support, (e.g. RPG/400). Forgive my "senior moment".
