I was party to one such problem many years ago.  To cut a long story short,
in the intervening 8 years changes had been made in the way the compiler
laid out storage.  Among other changes, some additional pointers were being
generated to speed up program calls.  The result was that the corruption
that had been occurring for years was suddenly screwing up a pointer and the
program blew up.  Previously the corruption had been occurring in a buffer
that was subsequently space filled anyway!

Always make sure parameter lengths match!  This is but one of many reasons
why prototyping your parameters is a really good idea.
