If this is the case I think, at least in my application, to get the best 
performance out of the %lookup is to 
1) Declare the character array as said: DIM(999) ASCEND.
2) Do a SORTA
3) callp on %lookup with start index, which should be the first non blank elem.

Thanks for everybody's help.  I've a better understand about %lookup now.  :).
