Yes, there are two MI instructions that do that.
CVTHC and CVTCH.

to a character or integer without doing it this way?

Youd need to make VARIABLE a data structure and the have SIZEINT
overlay(sizechar:3)

Does Anyone know of a good way to convert Hexidecimal to Integer?
 
The way I'm doing it now is
 
D Variable              S                       Qualified
D    SizeChar                            2A
D    SizeInt                               5I 0
 
 
 /Free
 
           SizeChar = x'0003';
           If SizeInt > 0;
           EndIf;
 
/End-Free
