If I ignore the SEU error the source compiles.  If I remove the length then SEU 
is happy as well.  I didn't realize that specifying the length would make a 
difference.  It only makes difference to SEU if the element is defined as an 
array since this is ok:   
d datesDS               ds
d dates                                  10d    datfmt(*usa). 
I'll remove the length, as Bob and Joel point out.
