Personal opinion here, so YMMV, but...

It's been quite a few years since I experimented replacing O-specs with an 
externally described printer file. However, since doing my first one way back 
then, I've _never_ written to anything but external printer files except basic 
query output, commands to *PRINT and stuff like that.

It's _well_ worth the initial effort. The first one is the hard one. Once you 
see how they work, it's _hard_ to go back. Would you design screens via O-specs?
