RPG IV calling SQLBindParam for a SQL_VARCHAR

This doesn't quite fit the subject but...

I am using the SQLCLI interface APIs (From RPGIV on a V5R2M0 box) and am
comming across a problem;
When using a varying RPG variable to select records by a varying (VARCHAR)
database field I get no records found. I have tried several variations on
the parameters to the SQLBindParam API and either error out on the
SQLExecute API or get no records found.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
