I wrote too soon. A test case using CURDATE() selected okay, but the SQL
precompiler gags with this error ("Position 60 The results in a CASE
expression are not compatible") when I use a variable.

There are dozens of non-iSeries examples of ORDER BY CASE on the
Internet. I can spoof the function with a CASE in the SELECT statement,
and that will allow me to spook a compound ORDER BY. The problem with
doing it this way, I think, is that DB2 won't be able to use any
optimizing techniques because I won't be order on DB2 columns, I'll
be ordering on a result field.
