scrDate is a 6 digit numeric field.  We are on V5R2.  Is the syntax
incorrect?

Of course, that's why the compiler is complaining. In free-form RPG you cannot have any space between the op-code and the op-code extender. Thus:

Test(ED) *MDY0 scrDate ;

Further, the 0 separator form is not allowed with a numeric field.
