Zoned data is a holdover from punched card days. The top 3 rows were "zoned
punches" and were used in combination with the lower rows to signify alpha
characters, special characters, and negative numbers. When these were
converted to magnetic data there had to be a way to keep track of these
zones. This is called Zoned Data and is recognizable if you do DFU on any
zoned field. The top row shows the zone punch, the bottom row shows the
card punch.

Packed Data is what you are used to seeing.

Subject: Difference between Zoned and packed

Hello everybody,
I want to know the diffrence between the datatypes zoned and
packed.
Are there any specific situations where they have to be used? i.e Usage of
both datatypes.

Thanks
