If you're on V5R1 and you have a field called mystruct.myfield you'll need
to type (in the debugger):
    eval myfield of mystruct

On V5R2 there was a bug that caused the error that you're referring to,
and the only fix was to download/install the PTF that fixed it.  That PTF
should be in the archives (that's how I found it when I had the same
problem)
