Hi Scott, Good comments, just wanted to address one of them with this link: >But, I will continue to avoid a .NET solution because I don't want to be locked into Windows. http://www.dotnet.za.net/viewcategory.asp?catid=5 Right up your alley right? ;-) Aaron Bartell -----Original Message----- From: Scott Klement [mailto:klemscot@xxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 11:45 AM To: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Subject: Re: RPG.NET > A co-worker just sent me this. http://www.asna.com/AVRNETandMicrosoft.asp > > Just wondering if anybody has any experience with it along with well rounded > opinions? Emphasis on well rounded and not blasts at Microsoft. I guess it depends on your requirements. ASNA has a good reputation. On the other hand, if you're going to write Windows-only PC software, Visual Basic is a lot more mainstream, a lot more widely supported. You'll find lots of add-ons for it (though, they probably also work with RPG.NET) and lots of code examples for various things on the Internet. Though, it may be more difficult to integrate with an iSeries. Java also has it's advantages, in that the code isn't Windows-only. You can run it on Mac, Linux, *BSD, or even OS/400. VARPG also has it's advantages.... for one thing, you've already got it if you're paying for Websphere Devel Studio, and for another, it can compile to Java bytecode so (theoretically) the compiled object can be run anywhere. Personally, I think using ANY of them is better than using none. But, I will continue to avoid a .NET solution because I don't want to be locked into Windows. _______________________________________________ This is the RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries (RPG400-L) mailing list To post a message email: RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/rpg400-l or email: RPG400-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l.
